DISRUPTED TRANSNATIONAL
WILDLIFE TRAFFICKING
NETWORKS
ACHIEVEMENT #14
ICCWC works to disrupt criminal networks by providing training, mentorship and
coordination to law enforcement authorities around the world.
For example, in 2024, ICCWC supported the disruption of a transnational wildlife trafficking
network operating across Madagascar, Thailand and beyond. In March 2024, Malagasy
Customs arrested couriers smuggling tortoises as part of an ongoing investigation into a
Person of Interest with mentoring from ICCWC.
By May, Thai authorities had seized over 1,200 endangered animals, including lemurs and
radiated tortoises, originating from Madagascar. ICCWC facilitated international
cooperation through intelligence sharing, investigation support and legal coordination,
resulting in an agreement to repatriate the confiscated animals. In December, in
collaboration with United for Wildlife, ICCWC coordinated the transport of the animals back
to Madagascar using free services from Qatar Airways and Airlink.
The animals were rehabilitated and prepared for eventual release into the wild,
showcasing the value of strong partnerships in wildlife protection.
