LAUNCHED PRACTICAL
GUIDANCE TO TACKLE ONLINE
WILDLIFE CRIME
ACHIEVEMENT #11
Illegal wildlife trade has increasingly moved online, with traffickers using social media, ecommerce, and encrypted messaging apps to sell ivory, pangolins, exotic pets, and other
endangered species. The anonymity and reach of these platforms make it harder to
detect, investigate, and disrupt illegal activities.
Recognizing the challenges to wildlife law enforcement, the CITES Conference of the Parties
adopted a Decision to develop guidelines for Parties on how to combat wildlife crime
linked to the Internet more effectively. Subsequently, ICCWC supported the development
of INTERPOL’s Wildlife Crime Linked to the Internet: Practical Guidelines for Law Enforcement
Practitioners, which have become a go-to reference within the law enforcement
community.
